Accommodation Procedures

Iowa State University welcomes diversity of religious beliefs and practices, recognizing the contributions differing experiences and viewpoints can bring to the community. There may be times when an academic requirement conflicts with religious observances and practices, and ISU is committed to making every reasonable effort to accommodate the religious observances of students, faculty, and staff.

It is the responsibility of the student to communicate religious/spiritual needs to faculty and staff. When needed, a religious accommodation can be requested.

Additional Guidance 

• Communicate early with your professors/housing. Academic and housing accommodations take time to make. For example, it is not reasonable to ask your professor to reschedule an exam the night before a major religious observance, especially those scheduled well in advance. Anticipating religious/spiritual needs early in the semester ensures there is plenty of time for professors and students to reach a reasonable accommodation. 
• Keep in mind that a reasonable accommodation may not be your preferred accommodation. Faculty must balance numerous factors in making accommodations, including their academic responsibilities outside the classroom, the availability of proctors, other important dates, etc. Reasonable accommodations are determined on an individual basis and may include (but are not limited to):
  • Alternatives to make up missed work due to religious observations
  • Flexibility in due dates
  • Rescheduling exams
  • Additional breaks or time away from class
  • Provide a time and/or place to pray
  • Flexibility to wear religious attire
  • Alternative housing options
